It's not in Chelmsford, but it's well worth the journey. It's just half an hour away so if you are leaving your car with us for most of the day, we would highly recommend taking our courtesy car to Colchester, you could even make a day of it and take the kids too. Colchester Zoo has has some of the best cat and primate collections in Europe, and over 260 species of animals and over 545 sub-species; many of these are classified as endangered or vulnerable species. Colchester zoo is well known for undertaking breeding programs both at the zoo and in the wild.

• Over 2,500 individuals in Colchester Zoo’s collection including fish, birds and mammals.
• Chimp World enclosure with four generations of Chimps including 39year old Orang-utan Rajang, resident for 27 years
• One of just 35 Amur leopards left in the world
• Flossie the Rhino, resident since 1970
• Kito the baby elephant, the first elephant to be born in the world after only one Artificial Insemination treatment
• Two Blue Eyed Black Lemurs held nowhere else in the UK
• Zedonk, a cross between a zebra and a donkey
• The longest underwater straight tunnel (at 24 metres) in Europe at Playa Patagonia.

Comments: "There is a huge variety of animals at this place and they have a really easy guiding system to show you around the whole place. It's great for kids but I had a good enough time just strolling around by myself seeing animals I normally would never come across. It was fun but relaxing."
