various grades of foam buffing pads

Next he moved on to buffing. Some people buff cars using different compounds. Compounds are coarse polishes which use aluminum oxide as an abrasive agent, the most severe of which is like liquid sandpaper. But we generally use a single polish and instead use different grades of buffing pad. As can be seen in the photo above, red pads are coarse while black pads are very fine and soft and are used for finishing.

buffing with a coarse pad

Mark starts off buffing with the red pad which is used to cut back the paintwork removing dull and oxidized paint. This pad is quite coarse and can often leave the car more scratched than when you begin - but not in this case.

Next comes the Orange pad which is a medium cut and you can already see an improvement.
