Willy's Summer Visit
Part 3 - Key scratched Vauxhall Astra
Page 2
Willy buffed the scratches - which removed or reduced them.
The areas that were to deep to reduce, as some of it was through the clear
coat, were touched in with black touch-up paint.

There was a scratch on the other side of the car which was deep, and on a part of the car where the clear coat appeared thin, so we could do nothing with it except touch
it in. So I haven't featured photos of it here. The scratches on the front wing vanished, and the key scratch along the near side was improved by about 85%.

The above photos shows what's left the scratch with the light catching it, my automatic camera now refused to focus on it which goes to show the extent to which it was reduced. Our window is above and to the right and it was a bright day, so when kneeling down and viewing it from this angle it caught the light and was visible..

...but standing up and looking down on it it was rather hard to spot. In the photo above, it's hard to tell the car was damaged. By no means do we pretend that this is an invisible repair but in many cases we can make a huge improvement. Its certainly cheaper than a respray and currently the best way to fix a key scratch -- although we are always experimenting with new materials and techniques -- we hope to be able to revisit this subject very soon with even better results.

Matt Saunders (Features Editor and photographed here with Willy) certainly seemed pleased with the results and we eagerly await his verdict in an upcoming issue of Autocar.

Clean
Image Paint Correction
"Whether your own a car or lease one,
preserving the it looked is becoming an important priority.
In a used car market where good mechanical condition and a
full service history is now taken for granted, the cosmetic
condition of a car is, after it's mileage, often the biggest
single variable factor determining what it's worth."
"It's a painstaking process that can take
can take up to 12 hours per car and cost up to £900 if the
car is severely scratched. It may sound expensive, but it's a lot
cheaper than a respray and, if you you're looking to impress potential
buyers of your second-hand motor, that would be money well spent."
