A hood that has not been reproofed for a while can soak up a lot of dirt, it can also begin to become a garden for moss and lichen -- it can be quite hard work to remove this and get the car completely clean ready for reproofing. As you can see from this video, Kieran cleans the hood with a rotary brush then flushes out the soap and dirt until the suds are bright white.
Making waterproof with a reproofer
Although it's not show in this video, once the hood is dried under our ceiling fans, the fabric is treated with reproofer, a hydrophobic coating which repels water and also inhibits mould, mildew, moss and lichen. This will often darken a hood sufficiently so that even quite old hoods are restored to their original colour and so don't require recolouring.
